ESTROM - Environmental Science and Technology in Romania
A Swiss support programme in the field of environment protection

On Friday 20 May 2005, from 8.30 to 19.00, the conference room of the “Casa Tineretului” hotel of Cluj-Napoca (53-56 Al.V. VoievodSt.) will be the venture for the meeting for launching and presenting the programme ESTROM - Environmental Science and Technology in Romania.
 
The ESTROM Programme includes 9 research and development projects, selected last year by a group of international experts out of a total of 22 project proposals, taking place over a period of maximum 30 months from 1 April 2005 onwards.

Funded by the Swiss Government and managed by the Swiss National Fund for Science, the programme was allotted a sum of 1.5 million CHF out of which 1.121 million CHF go to research, 100,000 CHF to the technological transfer of the projects resulting in concrete outcomes, 50,000 CHF for disseminating the intermediary results of the projects, and the rest goes to the administrative coordination activities.
 
The Romanian institutions in charge with the coordination of projects are:

- universities: "Babeș-Bolyai" University of Cluj-Napoca, University of Bucharest, Technical University of Constructions of Bucharest, "A.I. Cuza" University of Iași, "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iași;
- Institute of Geography within the Romanian Academy of Bucharest;
- National research – development institutes.
Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Research, Ministry of Environment and Water Management and of local authorities, project coordinators from Romania and Switzerland, directors of the institutes involved, representatives of the Swiss Government, of the National Swiss Fund for Science and of the Cooperation Office to the Switzerland Embassy to Bucharest.

Here there are some project titles: „Formarea de trihalo-metani și bromuri în timpul dezinfectării apei potabile în bazinele de acumulare și rețeaua de distribuție” – “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, „Cuantificarea gradului de poluare în zona industrială NEFERAL” – National Research and Development Institute for Non-Iron and Rare Metals of Bucharest, „Impactul activității miniere asupra mediului înconjurător pe râurile Crișul Alb și Certej” – Institute of Geography of the Romanian Academy.
